It's Designed to Connect Around Your Home.
If you ask Openreach to move the BT master socket, they will charge somewhere around £150. You may have to wait a fair while for the work to be done. It's not worth the wait, cost, or hassle. No line rental
Even if you don't actually have a phone plugged into the line, you'll still be paying line rental just so you can get a broadband connection. The only major broadband provider that doesn't require you to have a phone line is Virgin Media. If you do need to move a phone socket, then simply wire one to your master socket, even if it's a case of it being a few inches away. If you ask Openreach to move the BT master socket, they will charge somewhere around £150. You may have to wait a fair while for the work to be done.
Telephone Extension Socket Installation
You could just have a standard telephone extension socket installed that would allow you plug your router into a new location. This means that if you're to connect your internet router into the telephone extension it will not connect to the internet. The Master Socket belongs to BT, ergo the replacement is free".
The answer, however, to whether you can move your Master Socket is a simple, “no”. You can remove the faceplate of the Master Socket (just take out the screws) and this will show you another BT phone socket from which you can plug your phone straight in.
If you have DSL service, you can plug the modem into any telephone jack in the house, and plug the Wi-Fi router into the modem there*. Also, if you have DSL service, it's likely that your modem and router are combined into a single device.
The router connects using RJ-45 to the modem, which connects using RJ-11 to the DSL enabled phone line. A Small Office Home Office network router connects to a data network using an RJ-45 aka Ethernet cable. So no, you cannot plug a router into any phone socket - and expect Internet service.
What we are going to do is extend the DSL connection (which the BT Home Hub and/or modem uses) to another existing socket in the house. The exact same way telephone extensions work. This is allowed and possible because there is a DSL extension connector in the master socket to allow you to do this.
Two master sockets have been connected to one incoming junction box. It was sometimes done but was not ideal. This is OK for phones, but not good for broadband.
Which type of extension cable should I use? If you need an extension cable, use a good quality DSL cable (also known as ADSL cables) to connect your router to the phone master socket. Your SSE broadband pack includes one of these cables. Remember – using a longer extension cable may affect your broadband speed.
Re: New Master Socket/Install Charges
Either way that won't be doing your ADSL speed many favours. Anyway, answer to your question, no BT won't upgrade your internal wiring for free, their a business not a social service.Because fibre-optic broadband uses special cables to transmit data, you don't technically need a phone line. That being said, there aren't many fibre broadband packages that don't include a phone line.
Does fibre optic broadband use a phone line? Yes, it does. Although the majority of your broadband connection would be fibre optic, the bit between your local street cabinet and your home is still the old copper phone line. That's why line rental is almost always included in a broadband package.
Fibre to the cabinet (FTTC)
Most Broadband Routers are not compatible with the technology used with Fibre Broadband. You will therefore need to swap your existing ADSL/Cable Router for a Fibre Router that provides the throughput speeds and connection required to maximise fibre broadband usage.Fibre-optic cables run from the exchange to a cabinet on your street. The connection from the cabinet to your home is completed via a copper phone line. While data transfers to the cabinet are speedy through the fibre-optic cables, the copper phone lines aren't able to maintain the superfast connection.
When ADSL/ADSL2+ broadband is installed for the very first time, the BT engineer has to visit the exchange to ensure that the E-side cables are physically connected to the DLSAM equipment. However, a fibre installation does not require a visit to the exchange.
Sky have a team of Broadband engineers who are authorised and trained to move master sockets Sky charge £65 to do this but sometimes do it for free. Even if Sky did not have that team only they can ask Openreach to move the socket their charge is higher by the way.
In order to check if you are connected to the telephone company, you don't need to unplug anything or loosen any wire screws. Instead, just set your voltmeter to "volts" or "VDC" and touch the black probe lead to the red wire inside the box. Likewise, touch the red probe lead to the green wire.
A master socket (sometimes called the main socket) is where the phone line enters your home. It's where your broadband signal is strongest. To find it, look for a white box on the wall. It's always best to connect your broadband router to the master socket.
