Kindle eReaders require eBooks to be in a proprietary format unique to Amazon. Amazon has not made this format available through OverDrive (the library's eBook provider) in Canada, so Canadian libraries do not have the option of lending eBooks that work with Kindle readers.

Kobo and Sony e-readers work with library ebooks in Canada while most Kindle models don't support the open standard (EPUB) format used by libraries. However the Kindle Fire is the exception, you can use it to borrow books from Canadian libraries.
Public library e-books for Kindle e-readers are presently available only in the United States. From your library's website, you can have the e-book delivered wirelessly to your Kindle through Wi-Fi. Note that some publishers allow books to be transferred to your Kindle Paperwhite only by using the USB cable.
Available on Android and iOS, Libby allows you to borrow e-books and audiobooks from your local library. At the moment, Libby supports 80 percent of all public library systems across Canada, including the Toronto, Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Winnipeg, Ottawa and Hamilton public libraries.
OverDrive lets you borrow eBooks from your public library on your Kobo eReader. Currently, OverDrive is available in: Canada.
Audible memberships usually cost $14.95 a month, but Prime members new to the service can save 66% and sign up for a three-month trial for just $4.95 a month.
What is the difference between audible and Kindle Unlimited? Kindle Unlimited is a book reading subscription from Amazon, where you can read up to ten books at a time. Audible is an audiobook subscription service where you can purchase audiobooks at discounted prices and even download some for free.
Second—and this is the BIG difference between the two—is what titles are available on each service. Prime Reading gives you access to a little over 1,000 titles that rotate in and out periodically. Kindle Unlimited gives you access to over 1,000,000 titles.
Here's how it works:
- Sign up for a free 2-month subscription to Kindle Unlimited.
- Click on the Kindle Unlimited tab in your Amazon bar to search for available titles (you can search individually or sort by genre).
- You'll be able to add up to 10 titles to your Kindle Unlimited account at a time.
In my mind, it's totally worth it. The battery lasts forever, the screen has an adjustable backlight for night reading, it's much easier to carry around than carrying 2 or 3 books, plus you can put tons on it. You can rent 10 books at a time from kindle unlimited but you can take as long as you want to read them.
Using a search bar is even a better option. By default it's set here to narrow down the results to Kindle Unlimited books. Type the name of your favorite author, or the title of your favorite book, and you'll immediately see whether it's on a list.

When it comes to buying a Kindle in a store, there are a few choices. The main source is the maker, Amazon, but they do not have local stores. Some other places to buy a Kindle are local stores. After the release date, you can also get the newest models from some retailers and online stores.

A Kindle book can only be loaned one time. Once you lend a title once, there's no sharing it again — it's locked to your library. Not all Kindle books can be loaned. Some publishers impose restrictions on lending; if you don't see an option to loan a Kindle book, it can't be shared.
To borrow e-books, go to your local public library's website. If your library supports OverDrive digital e-book services, you can check out Kindle-compatible e-books. Note that some publishers allow books to be transferred to your Kindle Paperwhite only by using the USB cable.
If you have a Kindle account and you're in the US, you can read most OverDrive library ebooks on your Kindle. It is in fact easier to read on your Kindle than it is to read in Overdrive's own apps. After you've checked out an ebook, select the option to download the Kindle ebook.
To transfer the files, follow these easy steps:
- Connect your Kindle Paperwhite to your computer using the USB cable.
- Double-click the drive to open it and view the folders on your Kindle Paperwhite.
- Open another window and navigate to the file(s) you want to transfer to your Kindle Paperwhite.
If your library supports OverDrive digital e-book services, you can check out Kindle-compatible e-books. Note that you have to use your library card, just as you would when borrowing a print book. Note that some publishers allow books to be transferred to your Kindle Paperwhite only by using the USB cable.
Kindle is not compatible with the Libby App, but you may go directly through Overdrive to borrow books. Overdrive's website, for ease of use, should be accessed through a computer browser. The books will be sent to your kindle though, just the way your purchased books are.
Reading with Kindle
- Go to Shelf > Loans.
- Tap Read With
- Tap Kindle.
- You'll be taken to Amazon's website to finish getting the book. If you're signed into your Amazon account, verify the "Deliver to:" device and tap Get Library Book. If you're not signed into your Amazon account, tap Get Library Book, and sign in.
Sorting Kindle Books
Tap on All Items at the top of your library list and select List View. Now, tap the sorting menu to the right of All Items (in these screenshots, it says “Recent,” but you may also see “Title,” “Author,” or “Collection”).
