To get this permit, you'll need:

Driving Requirements
A driver's license from the U.S. or Canada is acceptable for driving in Mexico. You can rent a car in Mexico as long as your driver's license is valid, but always have your license on you when behind the wheel.The Mexico Free zone encompasses areas along Mexico's northern and southern borders. Yet, the entire Baja peninsula and a large portion of Sonora are included in the free zone. For all other Mexican border states, it is the area between 20 and 26 km (12 to 16 miles) from the border.
The Mexican government may not let U.S. citizens who are driving or walking to Mexico enter the country at land border crossings if they do not have a U.S. passport book or U.S. passport card. If the car or vehicle is loaned or being brought into or taken out the United States on behalf of a friend or relative, the driver might want to have a notarized copy of a permission letter addressed to the "Officer In Charge of Customs and Border Protection" to drive the car across the border.
Just like there are parts of the US that you might avoid driving in at night when you're alone, there are places in Mexico that you will want to avoid driving at night when you're alone. They can and do search a percentage of vehicles crossing the border. Its entirely at the discretion of the agent and they don't need a reason. If they feel like searching, they will. I've crossed the border more times than I can remember and had my car actually searched one time, at Prescott, Ontario.

Canada is not strict at all with Americans crossing its border. As a general rule of thumb always answer the border guards questions as straight forward with a s few words as possible. “Yes” and “no” if you can. If you do a lot of extra talking they will get suspicious.
