The first National Woman's Day was observed in the United States on 28 February. The Socialist Party of America designated this day in honour of the 1908 garment workers' strike in New York, where women protested against working conditions. But the first milestone in US was much earlier - in 1848.

Why Do We Celebrate Women's Day On 8th March? In the year 1909, the Socialist Party of America celebrated this day when around 15,000 women came along and protested low pay, long work hours and lack of voting rights in New York. It was in the year 1911 when Russia started celebrating the day on 8th March.
British suffragette Emmeline Pankhurst visiting Russia in June 1917 and the creation of the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom during World War I are examples of these early 20th century global links. These two suffragettes carried their banner to a White House gate on June 22, 1917.
