“Anorexia, itching, impaired coordination, lameness, hypersalivation, the appearance of choking, and bellowing are some of the signs of rabies in cattle,†Douglas said. Affected animals may also exhibit aggressive behavior, muscle spasms, convulsions, and anxiety. Cattle, however, are rarely vaccinated. But, in regions where rabies cases occur, valuable animals should be vaccinated, along with any cattle handled by people.
Rabies is not contagious from person to person. The virus most often spreads through bites from an infected animal. But it can also spread if the animal's saliva (spit) gets directly into a person's eyes, nose, mouth, or an open wound (such as a scratch or a scrape).
Can rabies be transmitted through food (i.e. by eating milk or meat)? Rabies virus is killed by heating, therefore eating pasteurized milk or cooked meat (including dog meat) is not an exposure. However, drinking unpasteurized milk from a rabid cow/goat is considered an exposure.
There is no cure for rabies, and it is almost always fatal. Once clinical signs occur, an infected animal usually dies within five days. The only way to test for rabies is by examination of the brain tissue of a dead animal. There is no way to test for rabies infection in a live animal.
People usually get rabies from the bite of a rabid animal. It is also possible, but rare, for people to get rabies from non-bite exposures, which can include scratches, abrasions, or open wounds that are exposed to saliva or other potentially infectious material from a rabid animal.
The rabies virus is fragile under most normal conditions. It is destroyed within a few minutes at temperatures greater than 122°F, and survives no more than a few hours at room temperature.
Rabies is almost always fatal in exposed humans who develop the disease. Thorough cooking will inactivate the rabies virus (see "Good Sanitary Practices - Bacteria, Viruses and Parasites in Game", but meat from infected game should not be eaten.
Although no human cases have been documented following the consumption of uncooked meat from a rabid animal, butchering or eating a rabid animal may potentially transmit rabies. If an exposure occurs, PEP should be initiated.

Bites are the most common mode of Rabies transmission but the virus can be transmitted when saliva enters any open wound or mucus membrane (such as the mouth, nose, or eye).
In people, the incubation period (the time between initial contact with the virus and onset of the disease) generally ranges from two to eight weeks. In rare cases, it can vary from 10 days to 2 years. The incubation period is shorter in children and in people exposed to a large dose of the rabies virus.
Bats with rabies are often disoriented, increasing the likelihood that they end up inside a dwelling by accident. If you find yourself in close proximity to a bat, dead or alive, do not touch, hit or destroy so the bat's brain can be preserved for rabies virus testing.
Once a rabies infection is established, there's no effective treatment. Though a small number of people have survived rabies, the disease usually causes death. For that reason, if you think you've been exposed to rabies, you must get a series of shots to prevent the infection from taking hold.

The first symptoms of rabies can appear from a few days to more than a year after the bite happens. At first, there's a tingling, prickling, or itching feeling around the bite area. A person also might have flu-like symptoms such as a fever, headache, muscle aches, loss of appetite, nausea, and tiredness.
The rabies virus is killed by sunlight, drying, soap, and the other agents mentioned. In animal experiments, early effective wound cleaning has been shown to prevent rabies infection.
However, fulminant disease can become symptomatic within 5–6 days; more worrisome, in 1%–3% of cases the incubation period is >6 months. Confirmed rabies has occurred as long as 7 years after exposure, but the reasons for this long latency are unknown.
It is important to remember that not all dogs have rabies, but all dog bites should be treated unless you know the dog has been rabies vaccinated in the last year. Vaccinating humans is very costly and it requires three injections over a period of one month.
According to Blanton, the typical human incubation time for rabies is approximately 60 days. However, there have been cases of rabies with an incubation time as little as 7 days and the longest incubation period documented is in excess of 8 years.
Rabies appears to have originated in the Old World, the first epizootic in the New World occurring in Boston in 1768. It spread from there, over the next few years, to various other states, as well as to the French West Indies, eventually becoming common all across North America.
Rabies is primarily a disease of terrestrial and airborne mammals, including dogs, wolves, foxes, coyotes, jackals, cats, bobcats, lions, mongooses, skunks, badgers, bats, monkeys and humans. The dog has been, and still is, the main reservoir of rabies in India.
It's possible for the rabies virus to be transmitted through water if an animal is drinking out of a water dish at the same time as another rabid animal or shortly after the rabid animal was drinking. The virus will not survive for long in water, but it will last long enough to possibly infect another animal.
Birds, snakes, and fish are not mammals, so they can´t get rabies and they can´t give it to you. In the United States today, about 93 of every 100 reported cases of rabies are in wild animals. Raccoons are the most common wild animal with rabies.
Rabies transmission from rats is not a concern. No one is quite sure why wild rats don't have rabies. One theory is that they are so small that they rarely survive an attack by a rabid predator such as a fox, and so do not live to pass on rabies.
Small rodents (like squirrels, hamsters, guinea pigs, gerbils, chipmunks, rats, and mice) and lagomorphs (including rabbits and hares) are almost never found to be infected with rabies and have not been known to transmit rabies to humans.
Thus, the animal is subject to certain laws by the state. Raccoons can carry rabies without exhibiting any signs of the disease. They are contagious to other susceptible animals. Because of this, their offspring can be born with the disease as well.
