U-Haul allows you to tow behind your personal vehicle or a rental truck. You can tow with all of their trucks, including the 10-foot. Here's how the price breaks down: U-Haul tow dolly: $99.
Prices may vary depending on location and state but expect a daily rental rate of $20 to $35 for an average size truck capable of hauling all your stuff and towing your car at once.
Costs for a tow can depend on your location and car type, so on a broader scale, towing your car can cost anywhere from $75 – $125. According to Cost Helper, the following are common prices based on distance: 5 miles or less: $35 – $125. 40 miles: $125 – $275.
Enterprise offers a wide variety of newer vehicles including straight trucks, cargo vans and towing equipped pickup trucks, all at competitive rates.
How to Tow a Full-Size Truck Behind Another Truck
- Securely hook the tow strap or chain from one vehicle to the next.
- It is best to hook the tow strap or chain to a receiver hitch on the front truck and a frame mount on the rear truck.
- Turn your flashers on as a warning for other vehicles.
- Do not tow for long distances.
If you tow a vehicle with an automatic transmission while all the wheels are on the ground, it could result in a lot of damage. Conversely, automatic transmissions do not disengage when the vehicle is in “neutral” and towing could force the transmission to move in the wrong direction.
How to Tow a Car With No Keys
- Determine if car has front or rear wheel drive. Check your owner's manual if you're unsure.
- Install self-loading dollies. Place the dollies under the rear wheels if the car has rear wheel drive or the front wheels if the car has front wheel drive.
- Attach tow strap. Do not attach to the bumper or axle.
- Drive slowly.
As a general rule all front-wheel drive and manual-lock 4x4 vehicles are OK to tow this way. The only equipment needed is a tow bar, which attaches to the vehicle undercarriage allowing for the front wheels to keep the car in line, and which attaches to the tow vehicle by a hitch.
Generally speaking, you don't want to tow a front wheel drive car from the back, keys or not or you will incur severe transmission damage to the vehicle. Keys are important to disengage the steering wheel lock, but putting a front wheel drive car in neutral does not make it safe to tow.
The tow dolly, a U-Haul patented design, is considered top of the line for vehicle towing. It is a perfect low cost option to transport vehicles for either in-town or long distance moves. Tow dollies are available for rent either behind a U-Haul moving truck or behind your own tow capable vehicle.

The vehicle-in-tow steering wheel must be locked. If the vehicle is not equipped with locking steering column the steering wheel will have to be tied securely.
The answer also depends on your situation. For longer moves, one-way truck rental is probably cheaper than round-trip. For example, to rent a 20-foot Uhaul truck to move from Chicago to Indianapolis would cost $269, according to U-Haul's online estimate. That includes 2 days of rental and up to 221 miles.
If you passed your driving test after 1 January 1997 and have an ordinary category B (car) licence, you can: Drive a vehicle up to 3.5 tonnes or 3,500kg MAM towing a trailer of up to 750kg MAM. Tow a trailer over 750kg MAM as long as the combined weight of the trailer and towing vehicle is no more than 3,500kg.
Here are the daily U-Haul rates for adding days to a U-Haul long-distance truck rental: U-Haul trucks – $40 per day. U-Haul trailers – $20 per day. U-Haul towing devices – $20 per day.
