The bottom line: People with devices both new and old will see an improvement by upgrading to a recent router that supports the latest Wi-Fi standards. But they should be wary of buying a cheap router that isn't any good, or spending too much on one that is too complex for their needs.
Three Signs You Need a New Router
- Sign 1: You had Internet access yesterday, but you can't log on today.
- Suggestions: This is a pretty good clue that your router has suffered a catastrophic failure.
- Sign 2: You can't seem to get anything done without your connection dropping off and reconnecting after a short delay.
Most ISPs that rent modems also want to rent you a router. (Or, more commonly, a combo device.) While there are pros and cons to renting a modem, you're almost always better off buying your own router, especially if you're using a high-end modem.
Upgrading to a current generation router is a cheap and effective way to improve your home network in every way: better Wi-Fi range, stronger signal, and better handling of demands modern users put on their network. Let's take a look at when you want to consider upgrading and then how you'll benefit from the upgrade.
About Authorized ModemsFor a monthly fee, Spectrum will provide a pre-configured WiFi router. Customers may also choose to use or purchase their own router. In the event that we upgrade network speeds and your modem doesn't support the new speed tier, we'll notify you and give you the option to upgrade your modem.
Buying a Router Can Be Cheaper in the Long RunThis rental becomes an added cost on your monthly bill. If you already have a router, you don't need to rent out the ISP's model. While the upfront cost of buying your own router is more, the long-term costs of an ISP router vs. your own router will save you money.
Re: Using old Sky Q router as a repeaterFirst make sure dhcp is disabled on the old router for both ipv6 and ipv4. then setup a static ip address for the old router. Then set the password for the admin and wifi network to be the same as your new router/modem, also the same SSID obviously.
Re: Can I use another Sky Router in the house? @SkyQwhatitdo you cannot connect two routers to a single broadband line. It is highly unlikely you can use your old Sky hub to extend the wifi to your room as it has no access point mode.
Yes. Not the modem, and not as the first device after the modem. You can use it as a secondary router cascaded off the router provided by the ISP. The reason is that they need their router as the connection end-point so they can mange the connection.
Yes if you upgrade to Sky Q then you'll be provided with either the Sky Q Hub or the Sky Broadband Hub. If you take Broadband Boost then you'll get the new Sky Broadband Hub.
NOTE:This is a ROUTER - NOT SKY Q TV Box and offers no TV Services. Expand the range of your Wi-Fi network , when used with Sky Q set-top box and any Sky Q Mini boxes act as wireless repeaters.
Yes, you can use a third party router which is compatible with Sky's MER/Option 61 connection protocol.
The TP-Link Archer VR2800 is a great value router. It ticks all the important boxes, including 802.11ac Wave 2 Wi-Fi, it works with ADSL2+, VDSL2 and cable connections – and it even supports Sky Fibre and ADSL connections, which is unusual (although getting your username password details can be a bit of a challenge).
Clearly, there's nothing wrong with Sky's performance, nor its customer service. The Sky Q Hub router is one of the best (although it only has two Gigabit Ethernet ports). Rivals offer the same speeds for slightly less but it's well worth checking out Sky's deals when you're next in the market for a new ISP.
If you've got the old, 2013 version of the Sky Hub, you can upgrade to the 2019 version by getting in touch with Sky and signing up for its Broadband Boost. But be prepared to sign a new contract.
Turning it off at night won't harm it but it is intended to be left on 24/7. This lets it do updates if there are any and it keeps your connection stable so unless there is a real need to turn it off you are best to leave it on.
Re: BT home hub 6 issues1.2 to 192.168. 1.253. The DHCP table covers 199 simultaneous connections, but in practice, you are never going to have that many devices connected all at once.
You can check which devices are connected to your BT Home Hub 4, Hub 5, BT Smart Hub or Ultrafast Smart Hub by looking at the Home Network map in the Hub Manager. For the BT Smart Hub 2, you can also use the My BT app. If you have a dual band device, it is capable of connecting to both 2.4GHz and 5GHz.
Re: Can I use old BT router? The router will work, but the line won't be connected so no point.
Millions of hubs, Wi-Fi discs and TV Boxes are thrown away every year. We could be recycling them safely or putting them back into homes. Please return BT equipment to us when you stop using it. You may be charged if you decide to keep it.
In theory internet service providers (ISPs) can "see" everything a user chooses to do online including every website they visit. But BT, one of the biggest British ISPs, says: "In terms of internet usage BT doesn't keep a record of any of our customers' browsing activity as we have no business need for this."
Your new BT Hub is usually enabled as a hotspot immediately, but don't worry if it takes a little longer.
As already mentioned, you can't sell it because it remains the property of BT and they may well require it back at some point. There's also a number of posts on this forum from people saying that BT have requested them to return equipment that they no longer have or face being charged for it.
This was described as the "BT Wireless Hub 1800HG", or in some documentation as the "BT Wireless Home Hub 1800". This provided one USB connection, four ethernet ports and Wi-Fi 802.11b or 802.11g wireless connection. A total of ten devices in any combination of these was supported.
