For beginners, as long as you can enable the developer mode on the machine, a Chromebook is good development machine.
Turn on Linux apps
- Open Settings.
- Click the Hamburger icon in the upper-left corner.
- Click Linux (Beta) in the menu.
- Click Turn on.
- Click Install.
- The Chromebook will download the files it needs.
- Click the Terminal icon.
- Type sudo apt update in the command window.
Once they are prepared for Scratch, Scratch runs great on the Chromebook and is totally web-based. The Scratch team will even be likely releasing a standalone app that can run on Chromebooks in the near future. So if your child is into Scratch, a Chromebook would be a great investment.
Chromebooks Make HTML Coding EasyBut using a free text editor for Chromebooks such as HTML Editey provides instant feedback. Two panes allow the user to write code and see immediate results. There are many other great features to HTML Editey that we'll write about in an upcoming post.
The common steps to turn on Developer Mode on Chromebook are:
- Turn off your ChromeBook.
- Holding Esc + Refresh (F3) buttons while pressing Power button. Then release Power Button.
- Your screen will display Recovery screen. Here, press Ctrl+D to turn on Developer mode. Then wait for couple of minutes.
The difference is that miniconda is just shipping the repository management system. So when you install it there is just the management system without packages. Whereas with Anaconda, it is like a distribution with some built in packages.
Crosh is a Command Shell environment known as “Chrome Shell” that is provided with Chrome OS. It is very similar to Command Prompt on Windows or Terminal in macOS devices. Crosh allows users to run several commands directly from ChromeOS. The vast majority of Linux commands are locked down inside CROSH.

File types and external devices that work on Chromebooks
- Microsoft Office files: . doc, . docx, . xls, . xlsx, . ppt (read-only), .
- Media: .3gp, .avi, .mov, .mp4, .m4v, .m4a, .mp3, .mkv, .ogv, .ogm, .ogg, .oga, .webm, .wav.
- Images: .bmp, .gif, .jpg, .jpeg, .png, .webp.
- Compressed files: .zip, .rar.
- Other: .txt, .pdf (read-only; you won't be able to edit these files)
Chrome OS does not run executables. This is why Chrome OS is so secure. You can use a Virtual Machine, such as PaperSpace .
Minecraft will not run on a Chromebook under default settings. Because of this, Minecraft's system requirements list that it is compatible only with Windows, Mac and Linux operating systems. Chromebooks use Google's Chrome OS, which is essentially a web browser. These computers are not optimized for gaming.
Download Windows on Chromebook devices using a USB flash drive:
- Open a browser on your Windows computer.
- Go to Microsoft's website to download the software for your Chromebook Windows 10 installation.
- Insert the USB flash drive.
- Open the file you downloaded and hit Accept.
Linux (Beta) is a feature that lets you develop software using your Chromebook. You can install Linux command line tools, code editors, and IDEs on your Chromebook. These can be used to write code, create apps, and more.
TL;DR: No Chromebook can currently run Ableton.
Disadvantages of Chromebook
- Limited Storage. Usually, Chromebooks have about 32GB of total storage.
- Not Recommended for Gaming. Chromebooks might not be the best option for you if you are looking for a computer that you can play games on.
- No Microsoft Office.
- Video Editing.
Use Microsoft OfficeMicrosoft offers a completely free web-based version of Office called Office Online, complete with Word Online, Excel Online, and PowerPoint Online. Microsoft even makes these apps available in the Chrome Web Store. These web apps aren't just for Chromebook users, though.
Also, if you need advanced photo- and video-editing capabilities, you'll want a regular laptop. Chromebooks typically don't offer the graphics performance you need for demanding tasks or, again, the option to install Windows or Mac games and software.
Microsoft Office for Chromebook: Google Play Store
- Open the Google Play Store.
- Search for the Office program you want to download and select it.
- Click Install.
- Once the app is done downloading, open the Chrome launcher to open the app.
- Sign into your Microsoft Account or Office 365 subscription account.
You can't install the Windows or Mac desktop versions of Microsoft 365 or Office 2016 on a Chromebook. The Android version of OneDrive is not currently supported on a Chromebook.
Installing the Microsoft Teams app from the Google Play Store. Open the Google Play app on your Chromebook. Search for Microsoft Teams. Hit install.
