Identifying Reputable Publishers
- Check that the publisher provides full, verifiable contact information, including address, on the journal site.
- Check that a journal's editorial board lists recognized experts with full affiliations.
- Check that the journal prominently displays its policy for author fees.
Here are 6 factors we consider when choosing a publisher.
- The editor.
- The buy-in from the publisher as a whole.
- The publisher's track record with similar books.
- The publisher's contract terms.
- The advance and other financial terms offered.
- The author's opinion.
It would be the date that you found the information you ended up using. That way, if the information were to change after the fact, you'd be covered if anyone said,"that's not what it says now."
Random HouseThe founders of Random House - American publishers Bennet Cerf and Donald Klopfer - took up the name after they purchased the Modern Library publishing imprint in 1927, which was licensed to publish reprint editions of classic works of world literature.
A publisher is the bridge between author and reader that helps make content readable. This function has grown all the more important in the Web era, where readers can be lost in a sea of content without the publisher's guiding hand.
In-Text CitationWhen citing a website with no author or publishing date in-text, in parentheses, cite the first item that appears in the references list entry exactly as it appears. If you are citing a full Web page and not a specific article, use the website name or partial URL.
Seventh edition style for book and book chapter references. That's right, you heard (read) it here first (at least I hope you did): Publisher locations are no longer included in APA Style references for books and book chapters.
A publisher can refer to an organization or the individual in charge of an organization which releases books, while an editor is an individual who works with authors directly, under the publisher. Editors typically select works for the publisher to approve.
Author. Title. First Place of publication: First Publisher; Second Place of publication: Second Publisher, Year of publication.
Publisher (Works Cited)Use shortened forms of publisher names. Common examples include articles from periodicals (journals, magazines, and newspapers), self-published works, Web sites with no publisher listed, and Web sites functioning as a container instead of a publisher like YouTube, WordPress.com, JSTOR, etc.
In Internet terms a publisher is defined as the individual or organization which produces or sponsors the website. This information is usually found at the bottom of a homepage, at the top or on a sidebar of the first screen, or the end of a document.
To cite publishers using MLA 9: Include only the name of publishers and omit business words. The business words are usually found directly after the name of the publisher. This includes words such as company, corporation, limited, and others.
APA Manual 6th edition requires you to include the publisher location when you cite it from a print book. The city and state should be included for US-based publishers, the city and country for publishers anywhere else. It also requires abbreviating American states and territories to their two-letter form.
MLA format follows the author-page method of in-text citation. This means that the author's last name and the page number(s) from which the quotation or paraphrase is taken must appear in the text, and a complete reference should appear on your Works Cited page.
Unknown AuthorIf the work does not have an author, cite the source by its title in the signal phrase or use the first word or two in the parentheses. Titles of books and reports are italicized; titles of articles, chapters, and web pages are in quotation marks.
If a book has no author or editor, begin the citation with the book title, followed by the year of publication in round brackets. If an author is also the publisher, put the word "Author" where you'd normally put the publisher name. This happens most often with corporate or group authors.
If no place of publication is indicated, use the abbreviation n.p. (no place). Example: N.p.: U of Gotham P, 2008.
Modern Language Association
When the author is a corporation or organization, either name the corporate author in the signal phrase or include a shortened version in the parenthetical citation. If the organization name is long, reference the name in the text.
Citations are placed in the context of discussion using the author's last name and date of publication. When a work has no identified author, cite in text the first few words of the article title using double quotation marks, “headline” style capitalization, and the year.
MLA Citation Guide
- If you have any missing information, supply as much as possible, using square brackets.
- If you are unsure of any fact given, use a question mark in square brackets. For example, [2017?]
- If the date is approximate use circa in front of the date. E.g. [circa 2017]
A publisher name consisting of the name(s) of person(s) should be abbreviated to only include the last name of the first person listed. Standard abbreviations should be used for other words (e.g., Acad., Assn., Soc., UP). Follow the publisher's name with a comma, the year of publication, and a period. Smith, John.
If a source is missing both the author or publication date, the citation will include the title, "n.d." for "no date," and the source. Make sure that there is no identifiable author.
If no author or creator is provided, start the citation with the title/name of the item you are citing instead. Follow the title/name of the item with the date of publication, and the continue with other citation details. Note: an author/creator won't necessarily be a person's name.
MLA format follows the author-page method of in-text citation. This means that the author's last name and the page number(s) from which the quotation or paraphrase is taken must appear in the text, and a complete reference should appear on your Works Cited page.
Books published by the author should be cited according to information available on the title page or copyright page. In place of publisher, include language such as “self-published” (abbreviated as “self-pub” in notes, but not a bibliography) or “printed by the author” is usually appropriate.

Unlike previous editions, MLA 8 specifies no difference in style for published/unpublished works. The main elements of a dissertation citation are the same as those for a book: author name(s), title (italicized), and publication date.
The basic form for a book citation is: Last Name, First Name. Title of Book. City of Publication, Publisher, Publication Date.
Publisher information is usually found on the title page or verso of the title page of a book. MLA uses shortened forms of publisher names.
