Very few (if any) stocks have been able to even tread water during this sell-off over the past few weeks, and so part of the move lower in the Lloyds share price can be attributed to the risk sentiment from the virus. Another reason for the Lloyds drop is down to its weak 2019 results, which were released last week.
The Edinburgh-based bank, which owns RBS, NatWest and Ulster Bank, said it would rename itself as NatWest Group. The bank was rescued by the government in 2008 in the aftermath of the financial crisis at a cost of £45bn and it is still 62% state-owned. What will bank branches look like in the future?
As such, now could be a good time for risk-tolerant investors to buy Barclays shares. It might be some time before the UK economy opens up again, but when it does, and confidence returns, the stock's current valuation suggests the shares could double or even triple from current levels.

Lloyds bank shares never recovered from the financial crisis. They are now trading around 30p, where they were in 2012. Admittedly, most investors hold banking sector shares for income, not growth. But with Lloyds having to suspend dividend payments, there's no return there either.

Barclays' share price pivot
Barclays' share price has flown through peaks and valleys over the past seven months. Last August, the bank saw its share price fall 11% from 155.9p to 136.6p, as worries concerning Brexit and the pre-deadline surge in PPI compensation influenced the drop.The improved results allowed RBS to pay a special dividend of 12p per share along with an annual dividend of 2p per share.
