Considering your usage, the shutter should last at least two to three years. If and when the shutter fails, it would probably cost about $200 to $300 to replace, but that's a large part of the value of the camera body and you may want to get a new camera at that point.
DSLRs are capable of shooting professional-looking video, and they're cheaper and more accessible than your average professional-level camcorder. One nice thing about using a DSLR for video is that you can pull the camera out of the box and start shooting right away.
You seem to be contemplating three problems.

- Camera locks up.
Yes, there are features and such, but it really isn't a lot more than just a picture collection device. Five years is about a good rule of thumb on a camera upgrade if you are pro.
A used camera can be expected to have about 10,000 shutter actuations per year for normal use. Again going back to the car analogy, if your used camera has a shutter count of more than 100,000, you should probably pass on that camera.
In most cameras, the shutter is rated for at least 100,000 to 200,000 shots, with top-tier pro models rated even higher. It's also common for camera shutters to last far longer than their official rating.

If you're in the market for a new high-end camera and have a few grand to drop, then there has never been a better time to go mirrorless, but if you're looking for something cheaper, then the options just aren't as good—especially if you already have a decent camera.

Quality videos can be shot on both — but Canon typically has a smoother autofocus and offers lenses specifically for cinema. When choosing between camera brands, it's best to compare each camera individually; where Nikon may have a better entry-level DSLR, Canon may have a better DSLR for sports.
