Birds are singing!There is a weather proverb that states, “Bluebirds are a sign of spring; warm weather and gentle south breezes they bring,” and this appears to be true in the northern tier of the United States.
Since spring, and mating season, is presumably just around the corner, it is time to start watching for cardinal courtship. Males will chase females, their necks stretched out and crests raised. They will sing to the females and offer food. They also sing to each other.
Here are the early signs of the new season to watch out for.

- Celandines.
- Bumblebees.
- Frogs and tadpoles.

Top five birds to see this spring
- Wheatear. Often the first to arrive, wheatears can be seen as early as late February.
- Swallow. Swallows arrive a little later than wheatears.
- Cuckoo.
- Nightingale.
- Swift.
You might notice the birdsong building from February as birds start singing again to attract mates or warn rivals off their patch. In late March and April you can see evidence of remarkable workmanship.
Great Horned Owls begin courting in December and start to nest in January.
