Normal AA/AAA batteries that have a voltage rating of 1.5V can supply constant 50mA current for a total capacity of 1800-2600 mAh charge and 3.90Wh of energy- Alkaline batteries. (Source: Wikipedia).
Batteries with a nominal voltage rating of 1.5 volts are excellent for powering low and medium-drain devices like clocks, remotes, smoke alarms, and flashlights.
In the end, there's not that big a difference – it's the same amount of energy per price. The professor compared three batteries: a 20-cent Dollar General zinc chloride battery, a 68-cent Duracell alkaline battery, and a 65-cent alkaline Energizer. There is a bit more to batteries than just the energy stored in it.
An LR6 type battery is a standard 1.5 volt double-A (AA) battery. LR6 is the designation name given to the battery by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC).
The voltage and capacity of a C-size battery depends on the battery chemistry and discharge conditions. The nominal voltage is 1.5V. Alkaline C batteries can hold up to 8,000 mAh, rechargeable NiMH C batteries can hold up to 6,000 mAh, and zinc-carbon C batteries usually hold up to 3,800 mAh.
The difference between AA and AAA battery: AAA battery is smaller in size than AA battery. Energy storing capacity is proportional to the size of the battery. So even both batteries could give same voltage, AA battery will give it that output for a long time.
Lithium AA batteries are 3 volts, and rechargeable lithium-ion batteries are 3.6 volts. Nickel metal hydrides and nickel-cadmium AAs are also rechargeable and are 3.6 and 1.2 volts, respectively.
Electrically, one AA could do this job since it runs at the same voltage as a D battery. However, it was easier to combine 4 AA's into one battery to simulate the size of a D battery and effectively replace it.

The letters indicate the size, in height and width, of the battery. For example, “AA” means “50.5mm x 14.5mm.” The N is actually smaller than AAAA—it's called N because it was the first mercury battery, and N is the International Electrotechnical Committee symbol for that metal.
An AA cell measures 49.2–50.5 mm (1.94–1.99 in) in length, including the button terminal—and 13.5–14.5 mm (0.53–0.57 in) in diameter. The positive terminal button should be a minimum 1 mm high and a maximum 5.5 mm in diameter, the flat negative terminal should be a minimum diameter of 7 mm.
You'll sometimes hear that B batteries are no longer seen because they were primarily used in devices that used vacuum tubes (most commonly radios), specifically used as a battery to provide the plate voltage for the vacuum tube.
The standard 1.5 volts comes from the original zinc and carbon based batteriesBatteries are based on certain electrochemical reactions and those reaction all produce a voltage in the region of 1.5 to 3.0 volts per cell. wire 2 or more cells together in series and you get 3,4.5, 6 volts etc.
Low voltage of 1.2V means that flashlights run dimmer, and devices needing 4+ batteries might run through batteries quickly, or not work at all. High self-discharge rate (they lose 10% of their charge in the first 24 hours, and then 10% of their initial charge per month just sitting around)
A typical alkaline or NiMH battery in the standard “AA” size has about 2000 to 3000 mAh (or 2 to 3 Ah).
Here are our favorite rechargeable AA and AAA batteries.
- Best Rechargeable AA: Panasonic Eneloop Pro (4-Pack)
- Best Budget Rechargeable AA: AmazonBasics (4-Pack)
- Highest Capacity Rechargeable AA: EBL (8-Pack)
- Best Rechargeable AAA: Panasonic Eneloop Pro (4-Pack)
- Best Budget Rechargeable AAA: Energizer (4-Pack)
Overall, the best rechargeable AA battery is the Eneloop Pro. They have a high energy capacity (2550 mAh), and they perform better than similar high-capacity AAs. They can only be charged 500 times (versus 2100 times for regular Eneloops). But most people will never charge their batteries that many times.
Batteries with larger mAh ratings generally last longer than those with smaller ratings, assuming that the batteries are subjected to the same patterns of usage, but it may not mean a better battery. The milliampere hour represents a unit of electrical charge commonly used to measure battery capacity.
Q: Can I use a higher rated mAh battery in my electronic device (i.e. 1800mAh vs. 2000mAh)? A: Yes, the mAh rating will give you longer run times between recharges. The higher rated mAh of a battery has no effect on electronic devices other than they allow longer term use.
It is difficult, if not impossible, to slow charge a NiMH battery. Harmful overcharge can occur when charging partially or fully charged batteries, even if the battery remains cold. The same scenario occurs if the battery has lost capacity and can only hold half the charge.
NiMH (Nickel-Metal Hydride) -- A good choice for a rechargeable battery
| The higher the capacity, the worse the shelf life |
|---|
| Type of NiMH | Largest capacity | Capacity after 1 year idle |
|---|
| Normal NiMH | 2700 mAh | 0% |
| eneloop pro (LSD) | 2500 mAh | 85% |
| eneloop (LSD) | 2100 mAh | 85% |
Can you use rechargeable batteries in all devices that typically use alkaline batteries? Yes, you can substitute higher capacity rechargeables into most devices that use standard alkaline batteries.
The 5 Best AAA Batteries
- Energizer Ultimate Lithium Battery.
- Duracell Ultra Power Alkaline Battery.
- Sanyo Eneloop Rechargeable Battery.
- Panasonic Evolta Alkaline Battery.
- Kirkland Signature Alkaline Battery.
Duracell batteries typically sell for about a $0.03 to $0.10 per battery premium (depending on type, quantity, sales channel) compared with their name brand peers (e.g., Energizer, Amazon Basics, Rayovac, etc.). They can get this because they have an excellent battery and Duracell has great brand recognition.
NiOOH or Nickel Oxy-Hydroxide AAA battery is type of alkaline battery where nickel oxyhydroxide is added to the manganese dioxide, leading to the 1.5 V typical voltage during high drain use and 1.7 V maximum voltage.

brief overview of all the different types of AA and AAA batteries today: Alkaline, Rechargeable Alkaline, NiZN, NiMH, NiCD, and lithium batteries (rechargeable and non-rechargeable) that are available in today's market.
ELI5: Why are batteries (Such as AA, AAA, D, ect.) so expensive? Because people need them and will pay the prices charged. The price has stabilized at the highest point people will accept.
AAA batteries can replace AA batteries by enlarging the size of the casing.
